Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 5, 2006, 12:14 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, September 6, 1984 Velma C. Betnar, 72, died Aug. 25 of cancer after a long illness. A funeral mass was held Aug. 28. Mrs. Betnar was born April 23, 1912 at Wapinitia near Maupin and attended the Wapinitia school. She was a retired cook and had lived in Clackamas since 1947. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Leo; three sons: Robert of Glendale, Ariz.; Ronald of Gladstone and Rodger of Gresham; a daughter Laura Lee, at home; a step-daughter, Donna Meyers, Hermiston; two sisters: Zelma Phiffer, Portland; Mary Zelda Hans, Salem, a brother, Verel Teschner, Portland; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews; an uncle Mose DeLore, Maupin; an aunt, Maybel Sturgis, Hood River. Her mother, Eythel Bell, formerly of Maupin and The Dalles, died in December 1983. Committal was in the Gethsemani Cemetery in Portland. Mr. and Mrs Betnar had just recently observed their 51st wedding anniversary.
