She was born Jan. 14, 1911, in Ledgerwood, N.D., the oldest of three children to Louis H. and Gertrude (Atcherson) Hobza. When she was three, the family moved to Pemberton, Minn. She graduated from high school there and attended Teacher’s College at Mankato State College in Mankato and returned to Pemberton to teach. She married Roman “Lefty” Mathias Bertrand on Aug. 15, 1938, in Sorrel, Quebec, Canada, and they moved to The Dalles in 1945. She started teaching as a substitute teacher in the early 1950’s and then taught full time with School District 9 as a fourth and fifth grade teacher, retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Peter’s Catholic Altar Society and St. Barbara’s Circle. She enjoyed her family, the outdoors, gardening, sewing and crocheting, arts and crafts and visiting with her friends. She is survived by her sons, Jerome Thomas Bertrand, Newport Beach, Calif.; and Michael John Bertrand, The Dalles; her grandchildren, Benjamin Bertrand and his wife, Rachel, LaGrande; and Amy Bertrand, Portland; three great-grandchildren, Brett, Brittney and Brook; her brother, Richard “Dick” Hobza, The Dalles and her sister, Elizabeth Walker, Mapleton, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband in March 2002. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church on Monday, April 19, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Todd Unger as celebrant. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
