Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 22, 2006, 10:06 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, January 26, 1996 John R. Berry, a resident of Goldendale, died Jan. 17 at a Portland hospital. He was 60. He was born to parents John H. and Martha Park Berry on June 5, 1935, in Walters, Okla. He attended school there. At age 13, he began learning woodworking and cabinetry from his father, and made custom cabinetmaking his career. Mr. Berry worked in states all over the West, but more particularly in Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona. He met the former Thelma White while in Flagstaff, Ariz., and married her on Oct. 23, 1965, and made Flagstaff their home for 20 years. They moved to Dallesport in 1986, returned to Texas in 1991, and moved to Goldendale in 1994. He'll be remembered for his determination and strong will, for his ease and enjoyment in conversing with everyone he met, and most especially for his skills with wood. He designed a chairlift for a neighbor whose children suffered from muscular dystrophy, which served as a prototype for a widely-used production model. After that, Mr. Berry tried to do things for and to visit disabled children. Survivors include his wife, Thelma, of Goldendale; his son, Kevin R., of Bend; his daughters, Elizabeth Taylor, of Salem, and Billie-Fern Fair, of Kansas; five grandchildren; sisters: Linda Winters, of Umatilla, Fla., Joyce Seay, of Apopka, Fla., and Naioma Cofer, of Sanger, Texas; brother Waymond Berry of Bossier City, La.; brother-in-law Bob White of Goldendale; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Toby, and a brother, Walton. Viewing visitation was held Monday, Jan. 22 at Smith Callaway Chapel with funeral services at 1 p.m. in the chapel, Pastor Paul Ryan officiating, and The Dalles Veteran groups rendering military honors. A short interment service will follow in the Parklawn Memorial Gardens Veterans Section. Serving as casket bearers were Luther Gore, Jim Gore, Jerry Stratton, Harold Bickel, Kevin Berry, Jeremy Taylor, Rocky Reid and Carl White. Memorials: Muscular Dystrophy Association, sent in care of Smith Callaway Chapel, 311 Union, The Dalles, OR 97058.
