Bernards, 87, a Corvallis resident for eight years, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Born Jan. 11, 1919, on the Bernards Farm near Yamhill, he was the second oldest of 10 children. In 1956, he married Patricia C. Connell in McMinnville. “Bob” and “Pat” raised five children together while living in the Yamhill, Wallowa, and Sherman counties in Oregon until eventually moving to The Dalles in 1964, where they resided until 1996. He was a farmer for the majority of his life and worked as a custodian for the public school district while living in The Dalles. He served in World War II as a flight engineer in the Army Air Force in Roswell, N.M., and was decorated for his service. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia Bernards, Corvallis; son Keith Bernards, Vancouver, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law Frances Bernards and John Hultquist, Salt Lake City, Utah; daughter and son-in-law Ellen Bernards- Mallon and Terry Mallon, Parkdale; son Carl Bernards, Beaverton; and daughter Mary Bernards, Corvallis. He was grandfather to Rachael and Audrey Mallon, Parkdale; and Jared and Ian Hultquist, Salt Lake City; and brother to Hubert, Larry, Norman, and John Bernards; and Jane VanDyke, Yamhill County. Vigil will be held at McHenry’s Funeral Home at 7 p.m. on Feb. 3, followed by a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Parish in Corvallis at 10 a.m. on Feb. 4. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Parkinson Disease Association and sent in care of McHenry’s Funeral Home.
