Benzin, 74, a former resident of Maupin (Oregon), died on April 19. He was born July 22, 1928 in Farnandina, Florida. He married Vicki Grant in Germany on November 17, 1951. He worked as a chemistry teacher in MidVale and then taught at Maupin as a chemistry teacher and also vice principal and coach and athletic director and then taught in Aberdeen, Washington from 1963 until retiring in 1982. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII and in the Army during the Korean conflict. He had two master of education degrees and was a member of the National Education Association and the Aberdeen Education Association. He was a member of the Woodburn Senior Estates Golf and Country Club and enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of the Aberdeen Elks and enjoyed playing guitar and singing, fishing and hunting and travels around the world. Survivors include his wife, Vicki Benzin, Woodburn; sons, Steve, Woodburn, Richard, Auburn, Washington and Russell, Hillsboro (Oregon); daughter, Lee Ann Thompson, Kent, Washington; brothers, Manuel, Jacksonville, Florida, Kenneth, Phoenix City, Alabama, and Joseph, Columbia, South Carolina; sister, Bertha Marie; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be Thursday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Woodburn is in care of arrangements.
