He was born July 25, 1933 to Joseph and Ida Alice (Perrin) Belcher in Poplar Bluff, Mo. After growing up in Missouri, he headed west, settling in Yakima, where he worked on a farm. He later moved on to California, working for Campbell Soup for many years. He returned to Yakima where he met and married Shirley Ann Cochran. The couple relocated to Hood River County and he was employed by a saw mill, working as a chipper operator. He lived his final years in The Dalles and will be remembered as the Salvation Army bell ringer in front of Kmart. He enjoyed bringing cheer to others during the holiday season and was an enthusiastic bell ringer — sometimes getting two bells going rather than the customary single bell. He is survived by his siblings, Bud Belcher, Lily Lee and Maudie Howell all of Missouri; children Verlin Belcher, Michael Belcher, David Belcher, Kathey Miles, Mary Belcher and Lance Belcher; many grandchildren and one great grandchild. Preceding him in death are his wife and his son, Joseph. Private family services were held. Gardner Funeral Home’s Columbia River Crematory handled cremation arrangements.
