He was born the son of Roy V. and Lilly (Doughty) Bates on Wednesday, April 28, 1926 in Salem. He graduated from Gresham Union High School in 1944 and served in the United States Army for 22 months during World War II. Upon his return to the states, he attended Linfield College for one year, where he met his future wife, Betty Murray at the library. On Sept. 5, 1947, he married Betty in McMinnville. He worked for Co-Oil and Supply in The Dalles for ten years. In 1960, the couple moved to McMinnville and he started his career in insurance. They moved to Newberg in 1968, where they have since resided. He pursued his work in insurance for 44 years working full time up to two weeks prior to his death. He was a Chartered Life Insurance Underwriter, a Chartered Financial Consultant and a Certified Senior Advisor. His many interests included music, reading, gardening, fishing, camping, and he loved to barbeque. He was a member of the Lions Club in McMinnville and the Toastmasters in McMinnville. Survivors include his wife, Betty Bates, Newberg; three daughters, Evelyn Neasham, Redmond; Karen Bates-Smith and Janie Bates, both of Newberg; two sisters, Grace Pierson, Tacoma, Wash.; and Jeanette Nelson, San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and those who have come to know and appreciate him where he has lived and worked. His brother and one sister preceded him in death. His memorial service will be Thursday, Nov. 4, at 3 p.m. at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 8501 N. Chautauqua Blvd, Portland, with Elder Edward Williams, Dr. Herbert Anderson, and Dr. H. Robert Ellisen officiating. Private committal will be at Parklawn Cemetery, The Dalles. Arrangements are in the care of Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, a Golden Rule funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Olivet Baptist Church, c/o Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road.
