Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 18, 2006, 12:54 am The Dalles Weekly Reminder, December 8, 1984 Lillie Mae Bates, 89, died Thursday, Nov. 29 in Dallas, Oregon. She was a resident of The Dalles during the depression. Mrs. Bates was born Dec. 3, 1894 to Martin and Mary Doughty in Lebanon, Ore. She attended school in Lebanon, Ore. She attended school in The Dalles and in Dallas. In 1915 she married Roy V. Bates in Rosedale. Soon afterwards they moved to Salem. During the Depression of the 1930s they moved to a farm in The Dalles. Then they moved to Gresham. They owned and operated ice cream stores in Lake Oswego and in Vancouver, Wash. for 15 years. In 1968 they moved to Newberg. From there they moved to Irrigon, where they lived for five years until Mrs. Bates required nursing care. They returned to Dallas, about 1982. Mrs. Bates was a member of the Oregon Grange for more than 50 years. While in Newberg, she attended Newberg Friends Church. She is survived by her husband Roy V. Bates, Dallas, four children, Harold Bates of Portland, Bryce Pierson of Tacoma, Wash., Glenn Bates of Newberg, and Jeanette Nelson Gause of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Pearl Cloudt, Glenn's Ferry, Idaho; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mary Alice Bates Meeker, died earlier. Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Attrell's Newberg Chapel-Brown Funeral Home. Private burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Salem. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity of choice.
