The Dalles Chronicle, April 20, 2005
     Wendall L. Bates, 70, a resident of The Dalles, formerly of Bridgewater, 
Vt., and Woodstock, Vt., died after a long illness on April 14, 2005 in The 
Dalles. 
     He was born Dec. 31,1934, in Hanover, N.H. to William A. Bates and Doris 
(Sawyer) Bates. 
     He served for several years in the U.S. Navy, some of that time on the 
USS Antietam. He enjoyed traveling, playing baseball in his younger years, and 
was a trophy-winning horseshoe player. 
     Survivors include his mother, Doris Bates, Fair Haven, Vt.; his son 
Wendall Robert “Robbie” Bates, Wishram, Wa.; four sisters, Beverly Severance, 
Bridgewater, Vt.; Arlene Henson, Deep River, Ct.; Linda Hazard of Belfast, 
Maine; and Laurel Knapp, East Haven, Vt. 
     He was preceded in death by his father, his brother Wayne A. Bates, and a 
sister, Marilyn Warner. 
     In accordance with his wishes, no public ceremonies will be held. The 
family will observe private services of remembrance in conjunction with the 
placement of his ashes. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
