Surnames: Bartruff, Rutherford, Bishop, Hollis, Van Horn Mary L. Bartruff, 77, a resident of The Dalles, died on Monday, November 4, 2002, at her home. She was born May 5, 1925 in Moline, Illinois, to Lloyd and Agnes (Rutherford) Bishop and grew up in Illinois. Following her graduation from high school she received her nursing education in Chicago and began her career as a registered nurse. She moved to Oregon as a young woman and married Wallace Bartruff in McMinnville in 1948. The moved to The Dalles in 1957 with the completion of The Dalles Dam, and she worked at The Dalles General Hospital in its old location and later at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center. She worked in all phases of nursing and particularly enjoyed her work in the Obstetrics and Delivery areas and working with the newborns. She enjoyed reading, sewing, working in her rose garden, knitting and crocheting, cats, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her children, son Daniel L. and his wife Vicki Bartruff, The Dalles; daughter Carol Hollis, Washougal (Washington); her brother, Edmund, and his wife, Donna Bishop, The Dalles; grandchildren Anthony and Tanya Bartruff; great-grandchildren Joseph, Austin and Andrew; nephew and nieces Ed, Sherry, and Lana. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986 and by her daughter Gwen Bartruff Van Horn in 2000. At her request no public services will be held; the family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the placement of her ashes. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058. Arrangements were by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
