He was born April 8, 1925, in Park River, N.D., the second of eight children to Elmer Melvin and Ida Sophie (Gustafson) Barstad. He was raised in Park River and moved with his family to Silverton in the early 1940s. He entered the U.S. Army on July 28, 1943 serving with the 91st Division as a heavy machine gunner. He served in Rome, Northern Apennines and obtained decorations including the Purple Heart. Upon his discharge in November 1945, he returned to Silverton and worked with his father as a carpenter. He then moved to Klamath, Calif. and worked in the sawmill. He married Ruth Esther Frovarp on Aug. 31, 1952, in Reno and they lived in Klamath before moving to The Dalles in 1959. He worked on the construction of the aluminum plant and then went to work for Harvey Aluminum and retired from Northwest Aluminum in 1990. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and The Dalles Country Club. He enjoyed refinishing antique furniture and was an exceptional carpenter, having built the family's current house with his brother-in-law, Oscar. He and his wife lived in the home for 35 years. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Barstad; his daughter, Deb and her husband, Bill Burns, Gresham; Greg and his wife, Marla Barstad, Yakima grandchildren, Jaime and Matthew; three sisters, Viola Lauderdale and Doris Wright, both of Salem; Marlis and her husband, Donald Denley, Gilbert, Ariz; his brother, Larry and his wife, LaDonna Barstad, Silverton,; sister-in-law, Verna Boyette, The Dalles; several nieces and nephews, including, Michael and his wife, Debby Boyette, The Dalles. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard; two sisters, Joyce and Jean; brother-in-law, Oscar Frovarp. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Sunday, April 11 from 2 to 6 p.m. and on Monday, from 8 to 11 a.m. Graveside committal services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland on Monday, April 12, 2004 at 1 p.m. Memorial services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 13 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dorthy Nielsen officiating. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home are in care of arrangements.
