He was born May 20, 1921, in Grass Valley, the second of three sons to Albin Frank and Anna Carolyn (Bruckert) Balzer. He grew up and attended schools in Grass Valley and served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He married Betty Louise See on Jan. 23, 1943, in Everett, Wash. After the war, they lived in the San Francisco Bay area, then in Portland from 1952 to 1954, before settling in San Leandro, Calif. They moved to The Dalles in November 1989. He was an appliance repair technician and was the Sears Service Manager in the San Francisco East Bay, Calif., area for 30 years. He was a member of American Legion, The Hi-Flyers, The Dalles First Christian Church and was an avid bowler and fisherman. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila and her husband James Pacheco, Castro Valley, Calif; two grandchildren, Corbin Pacheco, Concord, Calif.; and Elizabeth Pacheco, Castro Valley; one great-grandchild Tatiana Alarcon, Castro Valley; his brother, Ralph and his wife, Mary, Seal Beach. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty L. Balzer, in January 2001. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the beginning of the service. Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Threemile Road Odd Fellows Cemetery formerly known as Parklawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2120 First Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98109.
