He was born May 1, 1926 in String, Okla., to Lyfurs and Clara (Wagley) Baggett and moved with his family to California at an early age. He grew up in Live Oak, Calif., and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 after adjusting his birthday to fit the enlistment requirements. He served in combat in the South Pacific as an automatic rifleman during WWII and was discharged in 1946. Following his military service he returned to Live Oak and worked in agricultural jobs in California, Nevada, and Oregon. He married Pearl Wood in 1951 in Live Oak. She died in 1967. He married Bessie Sue Jennings in Reno, Nev., in 1972 and they moved to The Dalles in 1974, making their home here until her death in 1999. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and vacationing at the Oregon Coast and in Reno. In the 1960’s and 70’s he liked to take his family to drive-in movies, particularly enjoying westerns and war stories. Survivors include his children and their families; sons Virgil Baggett, Jr., The Dalles; and Robert Beck, Seattle; daughters Patricia Susan and her husband Brion Grigsby, Kennewick, Wash.; and Frances A. “Sam” Chandler and her husband Bob, The Dalles. There are six surviving grandchildren; Diamond Zerk, Shannon Hogan, Jason Martinez, Rodney and Allen Hert, and Adam Chandler. In addition to his wives he was preceded in death by a son, Tommy. Public services in celebration of his life will be held Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church in The Dalles at Eighth and Court Streets. Private interment with military honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
