He was born May 26, 1916, in Valley City, N.D., the fourth of five children to Peder and Laura (Andersen) Baarstad. He was raised on a farm in Flasher, N.D., after moving there in 1918. While growing up, he and his brothers had a dance band and at one time played with Lawrence Welk. He married Beulah L. Slough on June 22, 1938, in Bemidji, Minn., and they lived there until moving to the Portland area in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, then returned to Portland where he worked. Larry also attended International Correspondence School of Scranton, Pa., to become a concrete inspector. On Dec. 1, 1955, he earned his certifications as special inspector of Pre-Stress Concrete, Field Concrete and Masonry. He worked for Pittsburgh Testing Laboratories and Northwest Testing Laboratories in Portland, moving to The Dalles area in the mid-1970’s to work on The Dalles Dam expansion project. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and was devoted to his family. He is survived by his son, Lawrence and his wife, LeeAnn Baarstad, Pendleton; his daughter, Linda and her husband, Paul Worthington, Portland; and his grandson, Larry and his wife, Cheryl Baarstad, Pendleton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah, in 1991 and by his four brothers. No public funeral services will be held at his request. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements.
