He was born in Lead Hill, Ark. on Sept. 11, 1927 to Lula Bell (Gaines) and John W. Austin. On Dec. 20, 1945, he joined the United States Army and served during World War II. He completed his service on May 7, 1947. He settled in Trout Lake in 1963 and worked for Rogers Construction and SDS Road Construction Crew. In the 1970s he bought his own dump truck, which he ran until his retirement. In October 1996, he moved to Pine Grove, south of The Dalles. For the past year, he had been living at Mill Creek Point in The Dalles. He was an avid horseman. He broke horses, worked cattle and rode all over Mt. Adams, an area he knew very well. He loved to play the guitar and particularly enjoyed bluegrass and old country gospel music. He was an accomplished poet and songwriter. Surviving are his children, Janie Dodge and Bob Austin, both of Maupin; Sue Newton, Rochester, Wash.; Barry Austin, Bandon, and Scott Austin, Dufur; sister Dorothy “Dot” Wade, Yellville, Ark.; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Preceding him in death are sisters Avo Chappell, Elsie Sommers and Hazel Young; brothers Leonard and Lester Austin; son William Kenneth Austin, who died in the Vietnam War; daughter Vickie McGinnis, who died in April 2000; and his wife Monnie, who died in July 1995. A funeral service will be held at Gardner Funeral Home on Saturday, May 22 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the Trout Lake Cemetery.
