She was born April 15, 1909 in DeBeque, Colo. When she was four, the family with five children at the time, spent three months making a trip from Fruita, Colo. to Oregon City in a wooden wagon built by her father and pulled by their two horses. She married Robert (Bob) Austin in July 1937, who operated a typewriter business in Longview. Later on she ran a nursery school in the basement of their house and then taught kindergarten in Longview public schools and later taught in Kessler, St. Helens and Olympia until she retired. She completed the last two years of college while she continued teaching and graduated from Western Oregon in 1956. She and her husband traveled across the U.S. four times, took a few cruises and made a trip to Scandinavia to visit cousins in Sweden. She was active in the Christian Science Church.
