Austen, 73, a resident of The Dalles area since 1953, died Saturday at Mid-Columbia Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was born April 29, 1910 in Hamilton. Mr. Austen was a construction worker and participated in construction of The Dalles Dam. He was a veteran of the armed services, serving in the Marine Corps. He was also a founding member of the Oregon Archaeological Society. Survivors include two sons, Norman G. Austen, Denver, Colo., and Gerry W. Austen, The Dalles; two daughters, Carol Ann Austen, Anchorage, Alaska, and Patsy Kay McCann, Damascus, and 10 grandchildren. Graveside services were Tuesday at the Parklawn Memorial Cemetery veterans section with Pastor Asa Jenson of Dufur Christian Church officiating. Smith Callaway Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
