Cecil George Ashley Surnames: Ashley, Calhoun, Brown, Kennedy, Wrightson, Burns, Baltus, Krein, Lindley, Fine, Grazier, Snodgrass Cecil George Ashley, 89, a resident of Maupin (Oregon), died at a care facility in The Dalles, on Saturday, January 25, 2003. He was born June 21, 1913, in Missoula, Montana the fifth of ten children to Thomas Larkin and Martha Lonetta (Calhoun) Ashley. His family moved to southern Wasco County while he was a child and he attended White River School near Tygh Valley (Oregon). He married Ruth Evelyn Brown in Goldendale (Washington) on June 27, 1936. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher in the Maupin area, living in Bakeoven (Oregon) his entire married life. He was a member of Wasco County Pioneers, life member of Oregon Wheat Growers, Wasco County Cattleman's Association, Sherman County Historical Society and Mid-Columbia Old Time Music Players. He served on the Maupin High School Board and Soil Conservation District Board, serving as Chairman for many years. He was honored as Outstanding Cattleman of the year along with his son, Larry, in 1966. He had a great love for old bluegrass music, and enjoyed getting together with friends on an afternoon and just jamming; playing guitar, mandolin, mouth harp and squeeze box (accordian?). He played with several groups in his earlier years. He took pride in his garden and yard, especially his roses. His favorite way to pass time was spent in his wood working shop, as he became known throughout the area for his wooden clocks, selling them in areas outside of Bakeoven. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spent many hours at "Brittain Hole" on the Deschutes waiting for a salmon. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth; his daughter, Lois Kennedy, Wamic (Oregon); his son, Larry Ashley and his wife, Vicki, Bakeoven; grandchildren and their spouses Karen Wrightson, Maupin; Kim and Phillip Burns, Klickitat (Washington); Kristy Kennedy and husband, Dave Hanley, Portland; Debbie and Dick Baltus, Roseburg (Oregon); Steve and Julie Ashley, San Francisco (California) and Sarah and Bob Krein, Maupin; great grandchildren, Henry and Andrew Ashley, San Francisco; sisters, Anna Lindley, Bakeoven; Thelma Fine, Madras (Oregon) and Nina Grazier, Washougal (Washington); his brother, Massie Ashley, Dufur (Oregon); brother-in-law, Norris Brown, The Dalles; sisters-in-law, Barbara Brown, Yuma, Arizona and Janis Snodgrass, Maupin. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 30 at Bakeoven Cemetery, with Wayne von Borstel officiating. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
