She was born Oct. 29, 1916, at her grandparent’s farm in the Fifteen - Mile area, near The Dalles. She was the oldest of five children born to Elmer Ruekel and Anna Louise (Johnson) Brown. Her mother was born in Sweden and kept contact with a cousin there for many years. She spent her entire life living in Wasco County. Her parents farmed in the Bakeoven area and she attended 1st grade at Shaniko School, then transferred to the Bakeoven School. For a short time, she attended Dufur schools, but graduated from Maupin High School in 1935. She married Cecil George Ashley on June 27, 1936, at Goldendale. They farmed in the Bakeoven area their entire lives, going into semi-retirement with the ranch, while their son, Larry carried on the farm. She was always close to nature, as her interest was flowers and needlework of flowers. She was a member of the Maupin Dig & Hoe Garden Club, Home Extension Club, Wasco County Cowbells, Wasco Pioneer Association, and a Wasco County Redside Booster. Her other interests included old time bluegrass music, and she accompanied Cecil to many jam sessions and presentations. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Kennedy of Wamic and her children; Karen Wrightson and her partner, George Barnett, Maupin; Kim and Phillip Burns, Klickitat, and Kristy and Dave Hanley, Portland; her son, Larry and his wife, Vicki Ashley, Maupin and their children, Debra and Dick Baltus, Roseburg; Steve and Julie Ashley, San Francisco, and Sarah and Bob Krein, Maupin; great grandchildren, Henry, Andrew, William and Isabelle Ashley, San Francisco; her brother, Norris Brown, The Dalles; sisters-in-law, Janice Snodgrass, Maupin and Barbara Brown, California. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Cecil, on Jan. 25, 2002; her brothers, Donny Brown in 1960 and Clarence Brown in 1987 and her sister, Ellen Dreher in 1992. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28. Funeral services and luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Craig Snodgrass Ranch. Interment will be at Buzan Cemetery Remembrances may be made to Southern Wasco County Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 125, Maupin, OR 97037.
