Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 21, 2006, 2:57 pm The Dalles Chronicle, March 9, 2006 Donna Evelyn Ashbrook, 76, a resident of Dufur, died at a Portland hospital on Monday, March 6, 2006. She was born Sept. 18, 1929, in The Dalles, the younger of two daughters to Vernon Harvey and Arra Dorothy (Tobey) Crawford. She grew up in the Fifteenmile area and lived with various families in The Dalles while attending high school. She graduated from The Dalles High School in 1948. During the summer of 1948, she worked in the accounting office of George Waynemark then attended Bankie Walker Business College in Portland. After graduation, she worked for a short time at a Portland car dealership in the accounting office, and then returned to The Dalles to work for Burke Motor Company. She married Lester Earl Ashbrook on Sept. 1, 1950, and they lived in The Dalles for seven years before moving to the Petersburg area to farm with Donna’s father. They later moved to Dufur, where they have lived for the past 43 years. She was a member of the Dufur Christian Church and former member of The Dalles Calvary Baptist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and helped organize and present youth activities for the Dufur Christian Church. She was a longtime leader of the Ty-Du 4-H Club and charter member of Epi Sigma Alpha. She was involved in various singing groups in The Dalles and often sang for local wed - dings. She was an active supporter of the Dufur Threshing Bee and author of an autobiography entitled: Depression Kids. She was always interested in her family’s activities and enjoyed the family deer hunting adventures. She enjoyed having tea parties and sleepovers with her six granddaughters and hearing them sing in church. She had a passion for designing house plans and interior decorating. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Lester Ashbrook, her children and their spouses, Stanley and Linda Ashbrook, Barbara Thomas and Peggy and Shawn Skiles, all of Dufur; her grandchildren, Tom and wife, Jennifer Thomas, Emily Thomas Shipman and husband, Joe, Julie Ashbrook Deering and husband, Todd, Deanna and Andrea Ashbrook, Kristen and Megan Skiles; her sister, Dorothy Bradford and her husband, Jake of Canby, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Friday, March 10, at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home with Pastors Bob Peterson and Asa Jenson officiating. Interment will follow at The Dalles 18th Street IOOF Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Dufur Christian Church, “Special Project”, P.O. Box 425, Dufur, OR 97021 or Dufur Historical Society, P.O.
