He was born July 13, 1934 in Vancouver, Wash., the younger of two children to Fred and Doris (Johnson) Arola. He was raised in the Battleground, Wash., area and attended Parkrose High School in Portland. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean conflict and was wounded. After his discharge, he worked as a truck driver and for Northwest Bell Telecommunications as a host and greeter. He lived in the Portland area from the late 40’s until the late 80’s when he moved to Arlington. He enjoyed camping, the ocean, searching for agates at the beach, antiques, old country music, drinking beer and making people laugh. He is survived by his nephews, Larry Patterson, Newport; Dean and his wife, Charlotte Patterson, Cougar, Wash.; two great-nephews, Charles Patterson, Vancouver, Wash.; Phillip Patterson and his son, Reed; one great- niece, Tammy and her daughter, Isabela; numerous cousins and extended relatives of the Arola and Johnson families. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Arola in 1941, his mother, Doris Arola in 1976, his sister, Jean Patterson in February 2000 and his brother-in-law, Duane Patterson in November 1984. Private services were held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, at Willamette National Cemetery with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Heart Association, 1425 NE Irving #100, and Portland, OR 97232-4201.
