Armentrout, 89, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004 at the local hospital She was born May 17, 1915, in Charleroi, Penn., the daughter of Welsh second-generation immigrant Albert Watts and second-generation Belgian immigrant Josephine Watts (Morgan). Charleroi was a conclave of glassmakers who brought their skills from Charleroi Belgium. She married Robert C. Armentrout on August 17, 1940. After World War II, they spent the early years of marriage running a western Pennsylvania dairy farm. Economic conditions moved them to southern Ohio. She retired as an Ohio third grade teacher in 1978. They had three children, Robert L. Armentrout of Tucson. Ariz., Terry B. Armentrout of The Dalles, and Nancy J. Rice of Federal Way, Wash.. They had nine grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. During the Depression, she graduated with honors from high school. Her superior record earned her scholarships 30 years later. She graduated from Ohio University at the age of 50. She worked as a teacher for 16 years. She followed the lives of her students corresponding with many of them for over30 years. She and Robert retired to a life of traveling. Together they traveled across the entire continent of North America. Home was where they parked their fifth wheel trailer. They had camper friends, church friends, and family in every state and in every country north of Guatemala. She loved music, flowers, Penn State football, parades, and writing. She played piano and organ since her adolescence. She played at churches and for weddings. She played Piano in the MCMC atrium until just recently. She planted tulips, geraniums, annuals, and perennials everywhere she went. One of her great events was attending the Rose Parade in Pasadena when Penn State played Oregon in the Rose Bowl. She completed a correspondence course in writing children's literature at the age of 85. At the time of her death, she had several manuscripts under consideration by publishers. A memorial service and celebration of her life was scheduled for Gateway Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Nov.16, 2004 at 4 p.m.. Private cremation was held at Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
