Leonard Roy Allen, 83, a resident of Bingen (Washington) died Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at a care facility in Hood River (Oregon). He was born Janaury 30, 1930 in Leedy, Oklahoma, the sixth of seven children to Wallace Archie and Nellie (Oeonard) Allen. He grew up in Oklahoma City (Oklahoma) and served as a combat infantryman in the South Pacific and on Okinawa during World War II. He came to the northwest with his sister and brother-in-law after the war and worked for a while in the fruit industry before beginning a career in the woods as an independent logger and trucker. He later worked as a heavy equipment operator for logging operations. He had worked as a milker on a dairy farm in California from 1965-69. He was an outdoorsman who loved working in the woods, and he also enjoyed farming. During his military service he had also played on the Army basketball team. He is survived by his children; sons Tommy Allen, Husum (Washington); Ronnie Allen, High Prairie, Washington; Gerald Allen, Salt Lake City, Utah; Roy Samuel Allen, The Dalles; and daughters Myrtle Richardson, White Salmon (Washington); and Elizabeth Bryson, Roseburg (Oregon). Also surviving is a brother Marvin Allen, Camargo, Oklahoma, 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at the White Salmon (Washington) Grange Hall on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. Private interment will be in Camargo. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, Oregon 97058. Arrangements were by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
