The Dalles Chronicle, June 20, 2006
     Donald Lee Allan, 70, died at the Oregon Veteran’s Home in The Dalles on 
June 5, 2006.

     He was born Oct. 7, 1935 in Anacortes, Wash.

     He spent 17½ years in the Marine Corps, serving in Japan, Korea and 
Vietnam and was a member of the Francisco J. Flores Detachment of the Marine 
Corps League in Nampa, Idaho.

     He drove furniture van for Greyhound and Mayflower and hauled freight for 
WNI and Carrier Transport until he had to take medical retirement.

     He volunteered at the Wasco County EOC for six years as chief 
communications officer. He was an avid ham radio operator, convincing many 
people to get their amateur radio licenses.

     He held many offices in the amateur radio community, including Klickitat 
County Emergency Coordinator, Eastern Washington Section Emergency 
Coordinator, Northwest Division Assistant Director and he was also a W5YI 
Volunteer Examiner. He was always ready to talk on the amateur radio.

     He served on the board of directors of the Columbia Gorge Chapter of the 
American Red Cross as communications officer.

     He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jane; daughters Jannie and 
husband Ken Bice, Linda and husband Jarvin Whitesell, Laura Allen, and son 
Bobby and wife Melanie Allen; granddaughter, Cayla, Jessica and Jackie; 
grandsons, David, Alex, AJ and Deon; two brothers, Roger and Jerry and wife 
Lorna.

     He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

     Funeral services were held June 9 at Erdman Funeral Home. Burial was at 
Mt. View Cemetery.

     Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American 
Heart Association, the Mid-Columbia Amateur Radio Club or a charity of the 
donors choice.
