Vern Mobley, 70, says he was surprised the disciples of the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh put his name on the ballot Tuesday to elect him to the town council since they had not told him of their plan. Northern Wasco County PUD directors Wednesday rescheduled interviews for candidates for manager because of a meeting law technicality. At the last regular meeting of the board, it decided to meet at 2:30 p.m. November 3 to interview finalists. That would mean a quorum of the board be present dictating that written notice is required for an executive (closed) session. That notice was not sent, although board president Fred Spivey called the Chronicle before noon Wednesday to advise the meeting would be in executive session. 40 Years Ago, November 3, 1962 New this year to the teaching staff at Colonel Wright School are Mrs. David Curtiss and Mrs. Leonard Watkins. Mrs. Curtiss who is from Hermiston, is a graduate of Eastern Oregon College and teaches second grade. Mrs. Watkins, a former substitute teacher at Colonel Wright, is teaching the third grade. She is a graduate of Southern Oregon College. Coach Jim Titus' Lyle (Washington) Cougars, already the Klickitat County B League champions, won their seventh straight game Friday against no defeats in downing the Mosier (Oregon) Tigers 39-15. And the Washington powerhouse did it minus two starting backs, Roger Magaki, who was out with an injured knee, and Dick Smith, who suffered a cut ankle a week ago against Wishram (Washington). 60 Years Ago, November 3, 1942 Sheriff Harold Sexton stated today that, in the memory of Ben Sharp, jailer, one has to go back 16 years to find a time when the Wasco County jail has been empty for so long a time as during the period October to November 2, 1942. Yesterday, however, William Roland Young, accused as a Navy deserter from Bremerton, Washington, was placed in the county jail here while he awaited the coming of a naval escort back to the post he is said to have forsaken without permission. 80 Years Ago, November 3, 1922 The tourist run has dwindled to such an extent that each night finds only two or three cars using the facilities provided by the city auto camp. Harry Hall, park superintendent said this morning. The park has had a highly successful season, however, a grand total of more than 2,700 automobile parties having been accommodated since May 4 when the park was opened. 100 Years Ago, November 3, 1902 Yesterdays Oregonian contained a likeness of Virgil Earl, of this city, who has been chosen manager of the University of Oregon track team for the season of 1903.
