M. Combs, was drowned in the Dark canyon yesterday afternoon. Mr. Combs has a logging camp in Dark canyon and has an extensive contract for logs and ties with Grande Ronde Lumber company. The waters of the creek that flow down the canyon are of small volume and a dam wasbuilt across the stream to confine the water, and accumulate a sufficient quantity of water to float the logs and ties into the Grande Ronde river, and yesteday while young Combs and another boy by the name of Harry Wells were playing on a log in the water above the dam they in some manner slipped from the log into the water and young Combs who could not swim was drowned, young Wells barely escaping the same fate. Dark canyon is some 22 miles up Grande Ronde river and the above news was gleaned from a party who arrived here from up the river this morning. - La Grande Chronicle.
