All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com October 11, 2006, 7:00 pm Oregeon Daily Statesman December 9,1869 Murder at Hillsboro-The Commercial of the 7th has the following account of a tragedy in Washington County:It appears that Courtney Meeks,the son of the old pioneer,Joe Meeks,a half breed,got intoxicated and swore that he would kill somebody before morning.Presently Jacob Smith,an old citizen of the place and well known here by the apellation of "Big jake Smith" came into the saloon.Between Meeks and Smith there seemed to exist an old feud.As soon as Smith appeared,without saying a word,Meeks jumped up,ran to Smith,threw his arms about his neck and stabbe dhim in the regio of his heart,producing death almost instantaneously.Before steps could be taken to procure his arrest,Meeks effected his escape.This is amost aggravated and unprovoked murder.Mr Smith was known to be a quiet,orderly,peacable and industriuos citizen,and his sudden death calls down a just public indignation.A reward of $700 has been offered for the arrest of the murderer.It is supposed that Meek has taken to the mountains,thinking to escape either at Tillamook or Yaquina Bay-possibly Astoria or into Washington Territory.He is a skilled woodsman and hunter,and his capture will no doubt be difficult File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/or/statewide/obits/s/smith2240gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/orfiles/ File size: 1.8 Kb
