Death came at 9:45 Saturday night after an illness of several weeks from liver trouble and other complications. For two years Brownell has been inactive in public affairs because of physical disability.His illness had caused his family and friends to despair for his recovery upon several occasions,but his same indominatble will kept him alive. Born in New York Brownell was born at Willsboro,new York,August 10,1854,his family being of English ancestry and among the early colonists of New England. After a public school and an academy education Brownell studied law at Hudson,new York and was admitted to the bar at the age of 22.For a year he practiced at Frankfort,Kan.,and also became mayor of that town from 1884 to 1885,late becoming attorney for several Middle Western Railroads. After a succesfull start in his profession in Kansas Brownell heard the call of the Northwest and came to Oregon,taking up his residence at Oregon City in June 1891. Long in legislature The young barrister was soon recognized by many influential clients of Western Oregon and in 1892,he was made the nominee of the Republican party for State senator.The Oregon law required more than one years residence in Oregon necessitated him to decline the senate seat.In 1894 he was elected state senator by acclamation and served in that capacity for 12 years.Brownell was president of the senate in 1902,1903,and 1904.During 1918-1919 he served as a representative from Clackamas County. Brownell was prominent in fraternal life.He was a member of the Knights of Pythias,the benevolent and Protective Order of Elks,the Improved Order of Red Men,the Knights of Maccabees and Woodmen of the World. Brownell was associated at various times with the following attorneys: Gordon E.Hayes,A.S Dresser,J.U. Campbell,Livy Stipp,William M Stone,and Charles T Sievers. His home was at Crawford Station near Oregon City and there he built up probably the finest private library in the state.He is survived by his widow and one sister,Miss Florence Brownell of Portland,and two sons,Howard M of Eugene and Ambrose of Milwaukie The funeral was held from the Elks temple in oregon City ,when Rev M T Wire ,pastor of the First methodist Episcopal church,preached the sermon.Circuit Judge J.U Campbell,a former law partner of mr Brownell,and a life long friend had charge of the arrangements.private services were held at the Portland Crematorium,when rev Harold L Bowman of Portland officiated File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/or/statewide/obits/b/brownell2252gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/orfiles/ File size: 3.6 Kb
