All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com December 30, 2007, 2:54 pm Mornign Oregonina November 13,1904 Founder Of Oregon Fruit Industry Oregon City,Nov.12.,-(Special)-Afred Luelling,who died of pneumonia at his home in this city,Friday,November 11,was a pioneer of 1847,and was aged 72 years.he was born in Indiana and came ot Oregon from Iowa,with his father;Henderson Luelling,in the year,1847.With the exception of a few years spent in California,Mr.Luelling resided continously in the Willamette valley for 57 years.Besides his wife,Mr.Luelling is survived by two daughters and three sons,as follows: Mrs.Ellen E.Givens,of Blackfoot,Idaho;Miss Jane Luelling,Oregon City;John,Seth and Charles Luelling,all of Prineville,eastern,Oregon. Mr.Luelling at all times took a keen interest in public affairs,in which he was a prominent figure.He served as County Clerk of Washington County for two terms and afterwards was subsequently County Treasurer of Clackamas County.Mr.Luelling was a stanch friend of the public school,an earnest and conscientious advocate of the temperance ccause,and was for years promiently affiliated with the Grange.He was for years a member of the Masonic Fraternity,and was held in high esteem in private and public lifer. The deceased and his father,Henderson Luelling,may be considered the founders of the fruit industry inthis sttae.They brought with them to Oregon in the year 1847 the first grafted fruit trees that were ever brought into the state and introduced the fruit raising business by establishing a nursery on the old Luelling farm,near Miwaukie,where for many years theywere engaged in raising fruit trees for the market. Funeral services will be conducted this morning at First Presbyterian Church in this city,and burial will take place at the mIlwaukie Cemetary at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon,under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity.
