Carvallis,Or.,April 2-J.A.Knight,a pioneer of 1857,died a 1:30 this morning,from heart failure,aged 67 years. J.August Knight was born in Dresden,Germany,in 1824,where he learned the underatker's and cabinet maker's trade.Iin 1847 he emigrated to the Unitd States and in 1851,he came to California,residing in San Fransisci,unitl 1857,when he came ot Corvallis and immediateyl opened an ex????,which he succesfully conducted until his death.He had been a member of Barnum lodge,No.7,Independent Order of Odd Fellows,of this ciy,for about 30 years.Often during the war he would get Odd fellows together to hold meetings,thereby enabling the lodge to hold its charter.He has ever since ben considerd the father of Barnum lodge,he had been a member of the First Presbyterian church,of Carvallis,for over 30 years,and at the time of his death was the oldest member.The funeral services will be conducted by Dr.E.J.Thoompson at the Presbyterian church under the auspices of the Odd fellows at 2 P.M.
