All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmai.com December 23, 2007, 8:35 pm Oregonian December 9,1892 East Side Affairs Death Of Councilman Hansen A Brief Sketch Of His Career-Hawthorne Avenue Elevated Roadway-Three More Diptheria Cases Councilman H.Hansen died at his residence yesterday at 2 P.M.He was stricken with paralysis at the time of the visit of the war vessels,the first symptons being shown while he was inspecting the Baltimore.He partiallt recovered from his stroke,and was able to come to come down town and attend meetings of the city council.He took a relapse a short time ago,and his physicians were then hopeless of his recovery.He continued to grow weaker,and he sank to rest peacefully.He had been unconscious for some time.It is expected that the funeral will take place next Saturday,and will be conducted by Rev.John N.Denison. Mr.Hansen was born in Thorridge,Denmark,March 1,1827.He had a desire when quite young to go to sea,and he became a seafaring man.He first shipped to Iceland on a voyage beset with danger which lasted about three years.After this he entered a naval college,from which he graduated with honor at the age of 19.he served on board two man of war in the Schleswig-Holstein war,and afterward served as first mate on a government sloop running between Russia and Denmark,when in 1851,he took the position of first mate on a vessel plying between New York and Havana.In 1852 Mr.Hansen came to San Fransisco around Cape Horn.He came to Oregon the following year in a vessel that was wrecked at the mouth of the Columbia River.He was rescued with the crew in a small boat from Astoria.Mr.Hansen remained in Astoria a short time,where he engaged in a boating enterprise,and then in January,1853,he went to Rogue River to engage in mining,but the Indian War in that section caused him to give up mining and reutrn to the Willamette valley.For three years he engaged in the nursery business at Milwaukie with Lewelling & Meek.He was married to Miss Nancy Akn,who came to Oegon in 1852 from Iowa.Shortly after his marriage he removed to East Portland,and located on his present ground known as Hansens addition,where he was engaged in fruit growing,seeding,and raising ornamental trees and shrubbery.in 1860 he was elected commisioner of Multnomah county.He reurned to Denmark in 1873,on a visit to his mother.When he returned to the state he was accompanied by 15 young men and women from Denmark.He was elected councilman from the seventh ward in 1892 Mr.Hansen was a good citizen,a good neighbor,a man of sound integrity,genial disposition,and his death is a loss to the community where he was held in the highest esteem by all.By frugality he acquired property worth about $100,000.Only last year he completed a beautiful residence on the site of the home he had owned for 40 years.He leaves a wife and three children- Edward,Frederick,and Ida-to mourn his loss.
