His father,james Dickerson, was originally from New Jersey,and was a nea relative of Governor Dickerson,of that state. The subject of this notice was the youngest of a family of 11 children,was reared in his native town,and on arriving at the age af about 30 years he studied medicine and dentistry,and after completion of his studies practiced his prefession at Trumansberg,New York, for five years. he received a first prize at the World's Fair more than 40 years ago for the best set of teeth on Gold plate. In 1862,answering President Lincoln's call for troops to put down the rebellion ,begun by the people of the Southern States,on August 28 of that year Mr.Dickerson enlisted in Compan E,One Hundred and Forty eigth New York Volunteer Infantry,serving in the Eastern Virginia under the commands of General Dix,General Butler and laterunder General Grant. On first enlistment he served as a private soldier, was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutnenant,a nd later to the rank of First Lieutenant,and with such rank he had command of his company in the various severe engagements about Petersburg,Va. At the battle of Cold Harbor he received a wound in the thigh.At the close of the war the members of his company,as a token of apprecistion,presented a costly sword to Mr. Dickerson,which is yet one of the relics left with his widow. His discharge from the Army at the close of the war occurred at Louisville,Kentucky. Mr.Dickerson then resumed the practice of his profession in New Jersey,continuing there for for about six years;thence he went est to San Diego,Cl.,arriving there June 1,1878. After a little time spent at San Diego,he sailed for the state of Washington,and arrived at Olympia after a tempestous voyage of 37 days. Here, he was appointed teacher of the Quinalt Indian Agency,remianing at that agency eight years, 4 1/2 years of which he was Government physician at the agency. he came ot Portlsnd in July,1882,where he has since resided. Iin 1861 Mr.Dickerson was married to Miss Blue, a daughter of Mr. Abraham Blue, of Trumansburg,N.Y. To this union was born two children,a son and a daughter,both of whom died while young.After being married 26 years,Mrs.Dickerosn died on September 19,1887. The widow who survives Mr.Dickerson was the third wife,to whom he was married about seven years ago,and with whom he had lived happily at the time of his death. Mr.Dcikerson was a man of firm and strong will,yet his character was tempered by a generously kind consideration for others,which won him the warm friendship of all with whom he became acquainted.In later years,owing to feeble health, he has taken a very active part in public affairs. Mr.Dickerson was a member and one of the founders of St.Johns Presbyterian Church,of this city,was a staunch Republican in politics,and was a member of the George Wright Post,G.A.R. of this city.
