I can stand this no longer. Was born in 1832,drove a wagon across the plains and through Portland in 1853. Lloyd DeVore, aged 72 years, wrote this note yesterday afternoon and then fired a pistol bullet through his head,as he sat in his easy chair in his little cabin at Portsmouth. DeVore was born in Pennsylvania in 1832,He drove across the plains with the ioneers, arriving in Portland in 1853. He spent the greater part of his life in Oregon. He was a miner, and spent several years prospecting in Southern Oregon and in the neighborhood of Baker City.Of late years he has been living the simple life in a little cabin in Portsmouth, near the home of Mrs.Mary Willard, whose family were the only people with whom he freely mingled, and who he had known for years. DeVore spent a great deal of his time at the Willard home and took the majority of his meals there. Mrs. Wiilard's son by a fomer marriage,H.A.Pritchard,slept at DeVore's cabin and did all possible to make th eold miner's declining years pleasant,in return for many acts of kindness he had shown the family. For the past two years,DeVore has been suffering from a carbuncle in the back. Operation and medical treatment failed ot relieve him,and he is known to have suffered dreadfully. It was characteristic of the man that he seldom complained, but attempted to face the pain of his affliction with smiles and pleasantness. Yesterday afternoon in the neighborhood of 3 o'clock,Mrs.Willard's daughter went to DeVore's cabin to ask him whether he would be at teh Willard home for dinner. He answered her pleasantly that he would. A little after 5 o'clock neighbors heard what they supposed to be a shot, and it seemed to come from the direction of DeVore's cabin. A little lat Mrs.Willard's son went to the cabin to walk to Dinner with DeVore. As he entered the door he saw DeVore sitting in the easy chair and spoke to him.Getting no response, and thinking the old man to be asleep,he walked to the other side of the room, where he could see DeVore's countenance. The old man's head was bent slightly forward, there was a bullet wound in the right temple and blodd was trickling down the right side of his face. In his right hand he still clasped the pistol with which he had taken his life. He had been dead perhaps for half an hour. Cornoer Finley was notified and went immediately to the scene. An investigation showed a clear case of suicide. An examination of the dead man's effects showed that he owned lots in Baker City and also in Portsmouth.
