All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com January 5, 2008, 12:26 pm Morning Oregonian November 20,1904 J.R.Clark Dies Suddenly Expires At Walla Walla While On The Way To Portland John R.Clark,a well known pioneer locomotive engineer,died very suddenly at Walla Walla, Wash., November 16, where he had been taken while on his way to Portland from Pasco, to visit his son,Asal Clark, who is confined in St.Vincent's Hospital. Asal Clark,who is known as "Young Sullivan",a prizefighter, accidentally had a foot severed by a carwheel, and his father was summoned to Portland. He came as far as Walla Walla, when he was overcome with heart disease and removed to a hospital by lodge friends, where he soon died. Mr.Clark was for 15 years a locomotive engineer on the Northern Pcific Railway, but fo rthe past two years has been failing in health, and was compelled to retire from active railway work. He was 44 years of age, was born in Portland, his father, J.R.Clark, being a pioneer. Three sons survive him- William,who has gone for the body;Asal,who is in the hospital, and a younger son . Mrs.E.Smith,of Portland,is a sister and there are several brothers in California.He was a Mason, and members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. The funersl will take place this afternoon at 1 o'clock from Dunning's Chapel,East Sixth and Alder streets.
