Lebanon,Ore.,-March 7- The community is still excited over the murder of old 
John Lovell,just south of this place.Lovell came here from Kentucky in the 
50's. He resided on the south side of the Santiam until last year,when he 
purchased 40 acres of land of Richard Cheadle,on the west side of the 
Santiam,for $800.On it he built a samll log cabin,where he resided alone.He 
was a bachelor,and was a man of many possibilities,well known to 
everybody.Among other things,he always carried a peculiar looking satchel,in 
which he kept his money,at one time carrying $1800 for months at a time,beign 
afraid of banks.However he occassionally patronized them until he felt they 
were shaky.About three weeks ago he drew $500 from the Lebaon bank.which is 
said to have paid Mr.Cheadles,from which he bought his place.He was in Lebanon 
Tuesday,which was the last seen of him.At this time it is reported he drew 
$1800 from the bank,all he had in it.Sunday morning a neighbor going ot his 
cabni found it locked on the outside with apadlock and chain.Forcinghis way 
inside,the body of Lovell was found cold in death.His skull was crushed in the 
back,and there was a bad cut near one of his eyes.He had probably been 
dead,from different indications,four or five days.There was no clue to the 
murderer.Probably it was someone knowing the man's habit of being his own 
banker,and who knew of his drawing the money.A coroner's jury was at once 
summoned,but no new light was shed on the mystery.
