Deady Judge Matthew P. Deady was born at Easton, Maryland, on May 12th, 1824. When he was a small child he moved with his parents to Ohio, where his father bought a farm. He was a constant reader, and the long winter evenings on the farm were spentin poring over and over the limited number of books that were owned byhis father. H received his acedemic training at Banesville, Ohio, after which he commenced teaching. In 1845 he commenced reading law in the office of Judge William Kennon, of St. Clairesville, Ohio. In 1847 he was admitted to the bar and two years later he crossed the plains, arriving in Oregon November 14,1849. The following year he began the practice of his profession, and a few months later he was sent to the house of representatives from Yamhill county. In 1852 he was married to Miss Lacey A.Henderson, of his county. The year following his marriage, President Pierce appointed him one of the judges for the territory of Oregon, after which he organized the courts in the five counties of Suthern Oregon. In 1857 he was elected one of the sixty delegates chosen to frame a consitution for the new state. The judge was appointed president of this convention and upon the admission of the state into the Union he was appointed United States District Judge. In 1802, Judge Deady, James K. Kelly and Governor Addison, and C. Gibbsmen appointed were code commissionars for the state. The last two took no part of its preparation. He was also the author of the General Incorporation Act. This was perhaps the first act in teh United States that put all business corporations on the same basis, by declaring that any three or more persons may incorporate to engage in any lawful enterprise in the manner prvided by the act. The legislature of 1862 requested Judge Deady to prepare the code of criminal procedure and a penal code. This he did and his work was adopted by the legislature, he compiled all the laws and legislative acts of Oregon then in force. Judge Matthew P.Deady's name is one that is woven into the history of Oregon from the time before she was a state until this morning at sunrise.
