Mr. Conser came to oregon in 1848 and took up a donation claim upon the land where Jefferson now stands. He established a sawmill a mile and a half below Jefferson and called the site fo the mill, Santiam Ciyt. Finding that this was not a suitable site for a sawmill he abandoned it and about two years later built a flour and sawmill where Jefferson now stands. He was in connection with James Bates who died about two years ago, one of the founders of the city of Jefferson. Mr.Conser helped to organize the Good Templars in this state and was at one time grand worthy chief. He was one of the earliest of Marion county's judges and is well known all over the state. he leaves six sons, JOhn Lewis, W.Shannon, who is ta present conductor on the Southern Pacific, George,Henry and Hope. Mrs.R.O.Thomas, of Turner, and Mrs. Waton, of Washington, are his daughters. He died at Eugene this afternoon, at the ,at the age of seventy three. The fuenral will take place tomorrow at 1 o'clock in Jefferson. Mr.Conser is so widely known that the news of his deth cannot help but bring forth expressions of regret from all parts of the state.
