Walker, the subject of this notice, was born in Kentucky, Jan, 18, 1814. In early life with his father and family he moved to Iowa. He left that state for Oregon in 1852, arriving in the Rogue river valley on the 4th of the following September. Upon his arrival in the valley he immediately identified himself with its religious and material interests, and during his life, by his energy and enterprising spirit, aided much in its present development. During the Indian outbreak of 1855, he volunteered in one of the companies being organized and shouldering his gun went forth to the protection of the early settlers. After the war he again assumed the work interrupted, and some of his enterprises being unsuccessful, he seems to have gained courage from defeat, throwing into new enterprises a greater degree of courage and energy. Circumstances which would have dampened the ardor of most men, only seemed to brighten his hopes, stimulate to greater effort, and add faith in new undertakings. In early life he united with the M. E. Church, and his name will ever be associated with the early history of the church in this valley. And today Methodism owes much of its success to the efforts of such men as E. F. Walker, Revs. S. P. Taylor, Gray, Kahler and others. In the church, as well as in other associations with which he was identified, he was an active worker and liberal supporter. He allowed no man in any order of which he was a member to contribute to its success more than himself. He was a man of noble impulses, often assisting others to his own financial disadvantage. As a professed Christian he was peculiarly free from bigotry and a denominational sprit. His home was always open to the representatives of all religious orders, and many preachers as well as laymen will not forget the open hospitality of Enoch Walker. In his death the state loses a useful and honored citizen, the county one of its most respected men, and the community a good neighbor and friend. In the future his memory will be cherished by children, grandchildren and all others who knew him. –C.H. Hoxie.
