Smith, son of Mrs. Pearl Whitney, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Binghamton, N. Y., Friday. He had made his home there for the past 12 years. Recitation of the Rosary will be in the Conger-Morris chapel at 8 p.m. Friday. A complete obituary will be in Sunday's paper. James H. Smith, 34, Examination-Resident Dies; Plan Burial Here Medford (Oregon) Mail Tribune, Thursday, 25 Jul 1946, p. 13 Funeral services for James Heldon Smith, 34, ex-resident of the Rogue River valley who passed away suddenly July 19 at his home in Binghamton, N. Y., will be held July 27 at 2:30 p.m., at the Conger-Morris chapel here, with the Rev. D. E. Millard officiating. Interment will be in Butte Falls cemetery. Mr. Smith, a son of Mrs. H. C. Whitney of Jacksonville, had lived in New York for the past 12 years. He was born in Grant's Pass November 18, 1911. He served with the seventh cavalry at Ft. Bliss, Tex., from 1928 to 1931, and then with Company A, national guard, in Medford until leaving in 1934. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and a Shriner. Left to mourn are his wife, Jennie, of Binghamton; his mother, Mrs. Whitney; two brothers, Mark N. Smith of Eureka, Calif., and Loyd Smith Whitney of Jacksonville; three sisters, Beulah Surber, Ruth Lawrence and Violet Young of Jacksonville; four nephews and three nieces. The young man had a host of relatives in this area, being a descendant of the Winningham family.
