All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/or/orfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheron Faynor nitwittwin@hotmail.com April 26, 2008, 11:10 am Morning Oregonian September 11,1904 Last Friday Mrs.Elizabeth Hopwood Ross,widow of the late General John E.Ross,died at he rhome in Jacksonville,after a prolonged illness.Mrs.Ross was born in Pennsylvania on August 19,1830,and came across th eplains to Oregon with he rparents in 1851,arriving at Portland in October of that yeat.After spending the Winter in this city,the family removed to Jacksonville early in 1852. General and Mrs.Ross were married in Jacksonville January 7,1852,and they were probably the first white couple married there. Their first child,Mrs.Mary Louise Ross-Stanley is,so far as is known,the first white female born in Jacksonville.Mrs.Ross was the mother of 10 children,nine of whom survive her.General Ross,as it may be remembered,came to Oregon from Illinois in 1847,and served in the Cayuse War in 1848 under Captain H.A.G. Lee as Second Lietenant.He rendered efficient service as Colonel in the later warsin Southern Oregon from 1851 to 1856,and also in the Modoc War as Brigadier General of Oregon Volunteers under the appointment by Governor Grover.Mrs.Ross was greatly beloved by a large circle of acquaintances and friends in Southern Oregon,and her loss will be mourned by many.
