He was born in Indiana December 9, 1832, remaining in that state until 1859, when he removed to Iowa, where he remained five years. In 1864 he set out for the far west, crossing the plains in a train of 68 wagons drawn by ox teams. He remained in Montana for a yr and then came to Oregon where he engaged in mining and later in farming. In 1869 he was married to Harriett Newell, a native of Indiana, who passed away in 1896. Mr. Provolt was widely known throughout the valley and Provolt takes its name from him.
