Poe who passed away in Gold Hill Tuesday were held at the Conger chapel, conducted by Rev. D. J. Howe at 3:00 p.m. Friday. After the interment, his son, Albert Poe, returned to Oakland, Cal., from whence he came to be present at the service. Medford (Oregon) Mail Tribune, Saturday, 15 Jan 1927, Gold Hill Nuggets, p. 3, c. 4 Gold Hill, Jan. 13.--Friends of John F. Poe at Gold Hill, Grant's Pass and Jacksonville, were sorry to hear of his sudden death at Gold Hill Tuesday morning. The deceased was about 70 years of age, has been quite feeble for the past several months, yet was on the street daily greeting his friends. He died very suddenly with an attack of apoplexy at his home on Fifth street north, which was occupied partly by a family who gave the alarm of his death. He came to southern Oregon from the Cowlitz country in western Washington several years ago, and first purchased a home in Jacksonville where he resided and later sold and purchased a home property in Grant's Pass before coming to Gold Hill. On coming to Gold Hill about a year ago he purchased the old home property formerly owned by George A. Landis from Mrs. A. E. Zana. He has several old-time acquaintances in the valley who formerly steamboated on the Cowlitz river during the late '90s. The deceased was a shingle mill operator on the Cowlitz river a number of years ago. He leaves a brother in the Willamette valley and a son in California, who are expected to arrive at Gold Hill and attend his funeral.
