Piper died October 7, 1900, at the home of his old friend and schoolmate, August Moore, near Phoenix. He was born in Stratham, N. H., in 1834, and was a descendant from the old colonial stock, his father having commanded a regiment in the war of 1812. He came to California in 1849, where he engaged in mining, and had a large share in developing the mines of the Pacific states. He was honest and upright in all his dealings with men, a good, staunch friend and a consistent gentleman. The funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian Church by Rev. Wm. Clyde, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Phoenix cemetery.
