The death took place on Friday last, at his home five miles east of Medford, of Hezekiah C. Nute. Mr. Nute had been in poor health for some months past, and recently he was taken with typhoid pneumonia and so low was his strength that despite the best efforts of the attending physician, that disease soon extinguished the spark of life. The funeral service was held at the family residence, east of Medford, the interment taking place in the Odd Fellows cemetery. Rev. E. M. Patterson, of this city, delivered the funeral sermon, which was a splendid tribute to the noble character of the deceased. The singing was led by Miss Mabel Jones and Miss Lutie Ulrich, of this city. A large concourse of friends was present to pay a last respect to their departed friend. Mr. Nute was born in Medbury, New Hampshire, on February 20, 1836 and lived in that state until 1862, when he went to Iowa, remaining there until 1864, when he came to the Pacific Coast. He came to Jackson county in 1887 and settled on the place where he has since resided. He was one of the first to demonstrate that fruit raising could be made a profitable industry in this valley. He was a progressive, broad-minded man and his integrity was above question, and in his dealing with his neighbors he was the very personification of fairness and generosity. Mr. Nute was married in 1875 to Fancy E. Boone, a great grand daughter of Daniel Boone, and besides Mrs. Nute he left four children to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and a loving father. The children are Junius, Ernest, Laura and Nellie and all were at home except Junius, who is married and lives on the coast, and who was unable to be present at the funeral.
