Brownsworth, nine miles from Woodville on Pleasant creek. Justice of the Peace Simpkins, of Woodville, immediately empaneled a jury and went to Mr. Brownsworth’s place and found the report to be true and at once held an inquest, at which the following facts regarding the manner in which the unfortunate man took his own life were brought out: Mr. Neathammer had left Woodville Monday with a team enroute for his ranch on Wards creek and arriving at Mr. Brownsworth’s decided to remain over night. Tuesday morning he arose quite early, and members of the family who were up, saw him in the barn- yard, but when breakfast had been prepared he was nowhere to be seen, and a search was instituted for him, which resulted in his body being found in the stable, hanging from a beam. He had gone into the barn and in the absence of a rope had taken a strip of cloth and, stepping upon a low manger and fastening one end around a beam and the other around his neck, had stepped off. The distance from the ground to the beam was but seven feet, and the improvised rope was quite weak, and he had evidently done his work very carefully to prevent the string from breaking. When found, his body had been hanging but a short time and was immediately cut down and restoratives applied, but all efforts to bring the man to life proved unsuccessful. Dr. Drake, of Gold Hill, made an examination of the remains and after an explanation to the jury, that body decided that death was caused by strangulation. About $125 in money was found on the body, and this, together with other articles of value were taken in charge of by Justice Simpkins. Deceased was about 52 years of age, and unmarried. His father and three brothers reside near Woodville. The funeral took place Wednesday.
