She was a trained nurse by profession, having graduated at the same institution where she died, more than a year ago. The death of Mattie seems one of those dispensations before which humanity stands in [-?-] submission and waits in humble trust until the all wise Creator makes known his purpose. Why one so young and so useful in this life is taken from us is past finding out. Her warm and generous heart, full of tenderness and sympathy best responsive to every meritorious claim upon her time and means–a true friend a loving daughter and sister, with unwavering faith in the sufficiency of God’s plan of salvation. Language, indeed, is inadequate to picture the desolation her death has brought to the hearts of her grief stricken parents, brothers, sister and a host of friends. Still we have reason to rejoice that our loss is her eternal gain. Her mother was at her bedside at her death and brought the remains here for interment. The funeral services here were conducted by Elder Eli Fisher, of Medford, pastor of the Church of Christ, of which church Mattie was a member. There were many beautiful floral offerings from friends in Portland, Medford, Jacksonville, and surrounding country. Mattie was a granddaughter of the late Elder Martin and Elizabeth Peterson, well known pioneers of this country.
