He was born at Covington, Indiana, September 26, 1844, and he had been a resident of Medford for twenty-one years where he followed carpentry. He was united in marriage to Matilda Black at Norwalk, Iowa, December 18, 1871, and to this union were born four children: Frederick C. Miller, deceased; and he is survived by three sons: Edwin C., Medford, Ore.; Albert W., Hilt, Calif., Francis H., Sacramento, Calif. February 15, 1909, he was married to Mrs. Mary B. White, nee Bancroft, at Oshkosh, Wis., who survives him today. James W. Miller enlisted in the Civil war from Fountain county Indiana, August, 1862, to serve three years or during the war, and was mustered into the United States service at Indianapolis, Ind., on the 20th day of August, 1862 as a private of Captain William Conover's company H, 63rd regiment of Indiana, Volunteer Infantry, Colonel John S. Williams, commanding. He was constantly with his company during its service and bore a gallant part in all of its engagements and rendered faithful and meritorious service to his country. He was mustered out at Greensboro, N. C., on the 21st day of June, 1865, and received his discharge at Indianapolis, Indiana, by reason of the close of the war. He was a member of the Montaville Methodist church, of Portland, Ore., and of the Grand Army of the Republic. Funeral services were held at the Seventh Day Adventist church, 607 N. Riverside, Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. Chaplain [illegible] Chuemler of the Spanish War Veterans will officiate. Interment in I. O. O. F. cemetery. Arrangements in charge of the Perl Funeral Home.
