He was born at Wilkes-Barre, Penn., January 2, 1830, came west and was a scout in the government service in Northern California in the Indian troubles of the 50's. He settled at Grant's Pass about 1863. He was the pioneer brickmaker of the Rogue River Valley. He leaves a wife, Mrs. M. J. Mensch, and one son, Fred Mensch, the present county surveyor of Josephine county.
