McMerrick died very suddenly at his home 10 miles northwest of Gold Hill on the Foot's creek road at 3:30 yesterday afternoon. He, with his son Charles, had been cutting wood and because of a heavy shower of rain, had quit and went into the house, and while standing near the stove, Mr. McMerrick was suddenly stricken and fell to the floor. His son, who was within a few feet of him, helped him to the bed, where he passed away in a few moments. Coroner Conger answered the summons and believes death was due to heart failure, although an autopsy may probably be held this evening. Mr. Merrick [sic] was born at Buffalo, N. Y., 56 years ago. When a boy he came with his parents to California and later went back to his native state where he took up railroading and became an engineer running out of Buffalo. In 1900 he again came west and settled in Humboldt county, California where he resumed his work as engineer for the Southern Pacific. After retiring he took up a homestead and had resided on Foot's creek one year. He leaves, besides his wife, five children, all of whom are in California except his son who was with him when he passed away. The body was brought to the Conger Funeral Parlors and will be held until definite arrangements are made.
