High, of Ashland, received word last week that his son, Lester V. High, had died in the hospital at Cienfugas, Cuba, on April 4, of enteritis fever. Lester was born in Yolo County, Calif., Feb 14, 1873. He joined the navy in July, 1896, and served on the battleship Oregon. While in New York he was taken sick but recovered and on reporting for duty was placed on the gunboat Machias. He was taken sick on board and when left at the hospital, where he died, he was in a very weak condition, and although receiving as good care as possible his life could not be saved. The young man was well known in Ashland, having been raised there, and the sad news of his death was a shock to not only the family but the entire community.
